Can a lawyer licensed in New York represent a client in California and Nevada?
This question if for anyone who is familiar with law. I wanted to know if a lawyer that is licensed in the state of New York can be hired to sue someone over money owed for a loan against a person who resides in either California or Nevada?
I read an online article from 2002 that for the State of California, the New York lawyer cannot represent a client in the State of California, but I am not sure if the laws have changed since then. I couldn’t find any information regarding whether the NY lawyer can represent someone in the State of Nevada.
I’ve been on the internet but I can’t seem to find an answer. Can anyone help??
There are two ways the atty can represent you in another ( in which the atty is not licensed). s/he can associate with an attorney in that other state and that atty can pro hac vice your atty in the state courts. Or, the atty can ask that particular , specific court to admit him/her to that Bar for the singular case ( this is rare).
